What is the PA Supreme Court Retention Race?
Every ten years, PA Supreme Court justices face a retention race. There are no other candidates on the ballot, just a “yes” or “no” question on whether to retain them. If one of the three Democrats on the ballot this fall fails the retention vote, the governor appoints a replacement until the next election, but that replacement must be confirmed by the state Senate.

Why is this important?
The PA Supreme Court is the last line of defense against MAGA attacks in the state on everything from abortion rights to the minimum wage to affordable health care, as well as attempts to suppress the vote or reverse the outcomes of the 2026 mid terms or the 2028 Presidential elections.

While the governor of Pennsylvania is a Democrat, the Senate is Republican controlled, meaning if any of the Democrats up for retention -- Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty or David Wecht -- fail their retention vote Nov. 4th they could be replaced by a Republican.
